hey pom, thanks for asking. i talked to him at work today (i dunno if i mentioned it earlier, but we work at the same company, though he's in a different department), and he filled me in on how he's doing. the apartment complex has been very nice to them, and they are already in a nicer 2-bedroom apartment. at work, we all pitched in with some money for him, and this raised $1200, which has helped him out a lot. Tomorrow, I'm actually going over to his house to play some blitz chess and hang out a little :) interestingly enough, though they lost most of everything in the fire, one of the things that didn't get ruined was his chess set (a standard USCF board & pieces set). He also said that he now has fire, theft, and flood insurance. $11 per month. No photos or anything like that was required. Just signed up and that's it. This should be a good lesson for all of us. It certainly is for me. Pom, thanks again for asking. I told him that many people from this forum sent him their regards and he asked me to thank all of you for your support. Let's invite him for poker & play & let him keep the winnings regardless if he wins them or not. Anais "And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." Anais Nin

anais, this is kind of you - but i know Ja - he wouldn't go for that. he's a strong kind of person and wouldn't play any games where he wins because people are 'letting' him :) if he ever thought that i played him chess and let him win on purpose, he'd be very upset at me. who knows, maybe he's good at poker and he could end up taking all our money anyway "Remember, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday." - Dale Carnegie II

I understand what you said. I wasn't talking about letting him win... I was talking about letting him have the money. Like a benefit concert kinda thing...but only it's a poker game. yep...like, say...the winners (say, 3 people by the end of the nite have more chips than they started with, remain in the game and are ready to stop) donate 50% of each of their winnings to II's friend?:-) that would be cool, and keep everybody happy.... then everyone would strive to win for a good cause... w/out forgetting about themsleves either..... perfect conservative approach!:-)

F conservatism Baby! Get Radical!!!! The guy's house burned down & everything in it! We all have jobs... We all have clothes & shoes & socks & alarm clocks & cds & computers & silverware & towels....and and and.... And all of that that poor guy doesn't have & needs & has to rebuy. I don't know what he does for a living...but if I had to buy everything all over again.... on my pittance...that would suck. I know Pomidorchik that you are making an effort.... a small & unsteady step... and I commend you for it!.....but I think we should go whole hog on this one....
