    Help with Russian Names

    Hi!

I have a russian mother even though I am not russian myself, so I wanted to name my child a traditional russian name but I am finding this a little tricky.

I would like to give my child a Russian middle name (e.g. Ivanovna) but my fiance's name is "Jerry" which I think would sound ridiculous if used LOL

    Any suggestions?

Georgievna? (it's closer to George but I can't think of anything else)

Are you sure that you want to do this though? After all, you can always call your child this without it actually being the official middle name. I wish I could get rid of my "middle name" from official documents. Have you considered giving a middle name that's either your mother's or grandmother's name? (I take it you're having a girl?) That way you still preserve the heritage but it doesn't complicate the child's life too much :)

Did you also want to give your child a Russian first name?

The most common names for girls are Irina, Natalya, Maria, Anna, Ekaterina.

Go here or just google "russian baby names" for more information.

"I have a russian mother even though I am not russian myself" - And do you think your child is going to be Russian? You don't even consider yourself as a "half" Russian, why bother? Plus, I don't think your child will appreciate a "wierd" middle name anyway, esspecially, growing up with it. I am sure that there are much better ways to get him/her to know grandma's heritage. I don't know of any Russian families, which would give russian middle names (patronymic) to their kids born in the states.

    Re: Help with Russian Names

I agree with others: do not do this to your child. BTW, “Ivanovna “ is not a person’s middle name – it is more part of your family name.

According to rules of Russian language child of Jerry – Jerrievna. It would be very convenient for your daughter, if she moves to Russia in a  future. Wink

And yes, it sounds funny for Russians.

I am not even going to try to transliterate this.

Completely agree with Dasha and Karkusha, jkash, etc..  With child abuse laws becoming ever more stringent, you may be charged eventually with something or other in regards to psychological trauma Big Smile

    I love the name Ivana.

Especially, if your last name is 'humpalot'.

But then, I'm just an English spy and I-vana Hump-a-lot

You are getting your spies all mixed up.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the names of the asian "F" twins :)

We had a girl at school who had last name Дикина. Nothing unusual unless you put it in English as D!ck-in-a...

Tim Allen, who's real last name is D!ck was joking in his book about what would happen if his parents name his sister Anita.
