Some of them possibly were. Others were doing it because it was (interesting/fun/challenging/making them feel good about themselves/self promoting/opportunistic/just because)=Entertaining which leads to more Sex and better Food

Anyway, that "mysterious soul" action is nothing more than boredom. People got frustrated by monotonous life because historically in Russia they used to living in constant challenge. When they unbalance equation to the point of a total chaos they start seeking ways to balance it back. Do I sound like Matrix architect?

If we're talking about male population, pretty much all men within 40 plus minus 5 eventually get to the point that half of the life is past and nothing from their wild dreams have achieved. This really bothering fact hard boils any brain survived from years of alcoholic intoxication and spine function takes responsibility for decisions. Men grab hammer and a sickle and get on the barricades. Later, when the cold shower of reality brings severely damaged and dispersed pieces of intellect together the same men realize that what they had is much better than now. Most spend rest of their lives reconstructing lost lives. Others get into denial state and end up deeper into trouble for the rest of their lives. Have a great weekend everyone!
