I wanna see some sound explanations, I do not believe this.....  tracking - yes, listening in thru the phone - hell no.

Re: cell phone tapping.. have you seen this?

with certain software running on that phone anything is possible.

its even worse really , no software is needed to make this a "crisis". These are radiowaves traveling through public space, turned into data traveling through proprietary communication infrastructures subject to lawless and lawful intercept by any number of methods at multiple points.

I never understood why it was ever assumed otherwise.  If anyone has top secret business to conduct, whisper it in someone's ear, as was always the case in history.  Nothing changed really.   At what point did everyone just assume this stuff was private?  Wasn't this a concern with carrier pigeons?

My best hope, personally, is that no one cares about my communications Big Smile

If the phone can run Java, I don't see why not.

Re: cell phone tapping.. have you seen this?

Intercepting radiowaves won't work because it's encrypted, you have to tap into provider equipment to decrypt.

Tracking can only be done by triangulating location based on 3 cells , that's again inside infrastructure. Not an easy task - that's why 911 from cell phone doesn't give your location reliable.

GPS phone  - little bit diff story and could be doable. That's how google maps on GPS phones can show you your location.

So everything is down to a software installed on the phone Big Smile

listening to a conversation while phone is closed and not active --- call someone, place a phone 3-4 feet from you on the table and see if that someone can hear you Wink I rest my case.
and that's with open mic.  put a list of paper over the microphone and repeat !

Re: cell phone tapping.. have you seen this?

That's exactly what they were saying in the segment, the software is installed on the phone, good luck trying to crack algorithms used by GSM or CDMA.  And if the phone has a speakerphone it should be OK sound quality wise in a radius of 1-1.5 meters.

Basically, keep your phones on you and PIN protected at all times, a lot fewer chances that someone will do this to you.

Re: cell phone tapping.. have you seen this?

If the software can be installed on the phone, conversation can easily be recorded and then sent via 3G network to anyone.

Most Mobile platforms would allow access to unencrypted audio stream to any software running on the phone.  This is how on many PDA phones you can record your conversations. Symbios, Windows Mobile, Android, etc.

The hard part is installing the software on the phone without having phisical access to the phone.

Exactly, so the interesting part in that story - how come that family phones were cracked/infected multiple times ?

of course, i was not saying you can decrypt it by brute force like in 1943.  Those who know how to encrypt it, know how to decrypt it, and will share that information and access to decryption software/devices with anyone who entices them in some way.  These telecom companies are not like freemasons, high level engineers come and go.

should have watched for devices better..... russian, very simple, encryption machine using just 2 rings was never broken ;)

it's not that simple anymore. You can be THE guy who came up with DES 3, but it'll still take you couple years to decrypt even 64bit key ;)

open source PGP is outthere, haven seen anyone brake it.

Re: cell phone tapping.. have you seen this?

all i am saying is that access to decryption algorithms and equipment is not secure, and cannot be made secure.  Yes, it is proprietary, but there is equipment in place now (for example at Verizon) decrypting billions of data streams per day in realtime.  Yes, its impossible for a person with a pencil and calculator, but the capability exists and can be tapped given the right set of circumstances.

My point was - just assume its not private.  Don't worry about how.  I am sure there are many ways we are not even thinking of.

Watch your credit card bills (cc companies will believe you in all cases), watch for identity theft, don't discuss your ongoing felonies, etc.  Its not that scary, really.

I've personally gotten complacent enough to discuss only misdemeanors and my sexual perversions (some are misdemeanors in GA Big Smile), but i know the deal.  Its not assumed by me to be private, just very unlikely that anyone cares Big Smile
